Designed to illuminate the eye, projectors, whether those in the Paris Opera or, less pleasantly, the scialytic lamps in dentists’ surgeries or operating theatres, once deprived of the energy that enables them to project their beams of light, they become the objects on which the eye can rest. Unlike abstract images, they are reduced to the unglamorous aspect of their technical materiality.
